VW next generation design trends

Here I have tried to incorporate a lot of the next generation VW style into the up for the estate I'm designing. As VW are putting a lot more horizontal lines into the design, also how the lines from the grille then blend into the headlights and are then apart of the headlight design. Also in the rear they are introducing a lot of exhaust tips that protrude from within the body work giving a much sporty and clean look. And there seems to be a muscle line in the upper mask area of the car which joins the front headlamps. So these are some ideas I've put together

VW up estate

Here i am trying to extend the back end of the VW up to create an estate version. And I've incorporated one of my face lift ideas on the front and rear of the car. Here I'm just trying to find the best shape to extend the car. And I feel this still feels very VW and you can still tell its a derivative of an up. I've put the rear window line from the 3 door up and Incorporated it into this design as I much prefer it compared to the boring flat line which the 5 door up has.

Vw up facelift

Here is a render of a VW up facelift idea. I've tried to incorporate some of the next generation ideas from VW such as the exhaust tips in the rear bumper, but still trying to maintain some current VW trends such as the shape in the top of the headlamps and the curved line in the front bumper, and the lower grille, as it is only a facelift.

Engineering

More engineering going on here. Looking into all the different chassis available. And all the different types and strength of metals etc used. And how different chassis have pros and cons. For example the tubular space frame chassis is very complex and time consuming to produce.

Engineering project

Started our engineering project on our course. Having to pick a car and see how it is put together and research into all different components used on different cars e.g different types of suspension. Here I've drawn the front sub frame which holds the steering column, suspension and connects the brakes and hubs and then then wheels. It's a really interesting project to see how all the parts come together, and the different designs to suit different sized cars.

Hankook tire: the future of tires

This is incredible. I have never really thought into many concepts of tires/wheels/suspension so this blew my mind. They have thought of many options, a sports tire, intelligent future tire, a hybrid tyre and a 4x4 tire. with these 4 types they just about the cover the whole range of cars needed. Hankook have out done themselves, i dont know how practical they would be or how they would work, but it would revolutionise the tire/suspension/wheels market and change how drive completely. for the example the sports tire looks like it would get rid of most if not all body-roll whilst cornering. which would completely change the driving experience. i guess we can only wait and see.

Audi self parking car

This is really cool, and there is a real need for this self parking, Ford did some parralel park assist a few years ago. But this would save a lot of people a lot of time. a car you can just leave and it will park itself and then come pick you up outside. sure you can see a lot of things that could trouble it. such as when you have to pay for parking? the car park is full? pedestrians walking out unexpectedly? But with Audi you can see them making it work and you can start to see the future of the driver assists that we will have. I look forward to seeing what happens in the future.

Lamborghini is snow

As there is still snow about i thought i would post another picture with some snow. I love this photo of this Lamborghini, with a bit of snow on it, its dark with just the street lights, giving a great dark and moody setting. This is what a Lamborghini is all about, with its low and wide stance, sharp lines, pointy nose, aggressive air ducts. this is one mean looking street car.

MK1 Golf

The MK1 Golf, in my opinion an iconic car and it will be forever, and the original hot hatch. it has that classic 70's simple styling, the boxy shape, the renowned round headlights and black square VW were known for in those days. The small chrome bumpers and the chrome trim around the window and along the sill and the side of the car, creating some nice lines on the boxy shape and adding a little shine to the design. Even today these cars look very simple, classy and different, showing VW have a good design strategy that the cars still look good today. Even the cars they produce now will look good in 30 years time.

Its SNOWING!!!!!

Its snowing so grab your porsche, put the ski's on the back and head for the slopes! don't know how practical the car is for it but it would be a lot of fun! i love old porsche's, even though you never see design like this now a days with the widest part of the car being at the sill. This just somehow works, and i love it. i love the smooth curves and lines of the car, and the small taillights thats are just simple and dont shout 'look at me' just like the whole car, its simple, elegant and understated.

Fiat 500

I do love an original Fiat 500, its just so bubbly, i love the muscle lines than run down the side, the arches that just ooze out of the bodywork. how the back just slides down and everything just flows together. then the round headlights just give it that look, which makes it seem like its alive, just like a mini. this has been inspired like the Fiat 500 off the disney film 'cars' as he loves ferrari's so its been painted in ferrari red and obviously has those ferrari stripes. its a nice modern restoration on a classic small italian car.

The MOOBY

Saw this bike and thought it was cool, it looks like it would be awfully uncomfortable and hard to ride as it seems to have a track frame geometry even though it makes the bike look very aggressive with the low front and high rear. The rear wheel reminds me of the car from the Tron Movie, but i like how the silver frame has some nice soft edges then the black art of the frame has very sharp angular lines giving a nice contrast. the handle bars all remind me of deer antlers. But there are a lot of different shapes and forms on the bike but they all come together nicely and work so well as a piece of design. if it works is a different matter.

Bmw Z2 roadster

The BMW Z2 roadster concept, they seriously need to make this, as BMW need to get into the market of a front wheel drive roadster. This just ticks all the boxes. I love the low nose and the headlights are very BMW but the seem a little flat and squashed which gives an angry and sporty look to the car with the air ducts and grille on the front bumper adding to the aggressive feel. the front end is very pointy making the car look like its moving and advancing even when still. the side reminds me of an Audi TT with the higher feature line running along the side then dropping down when it reaches the taillights. Then the lower muscle line on the side of the car helping it look lower the it rises and blends into the rear arch nicely. the whole car works and all the lines blend together fantastically. I love it and really hope they make it.

New MINI 2014

New Images of the new mini supposed to be released 2014. Im a big mini fan and own the first new MINI released. I do like this but there are a few things i don't. its still very mini like, obviously not in size, but features like the headlamps, wing mirrors and roof. it has been modernised in other places like the front grille, being one piece, it still has the traditional MINI grille shape, it just reminds me of the nissan GT-R grille. Also the wheel arches look like they have just been stuck on and do not flow with the car. but overall its still very recognisable as a MINI, and looks very cool and modern. It will sell as all MINI's do.

VW UP!

On our course at the moment we have to do a facelift version of a Volkswagen up! which in my opinion is already a great looking car, which is very sharp, cool and simple. it has alot of VW touches which are seen across the range, such as the grille in the front bumper, the headlight shape and on the rear bumper the lower trim. its one very cool little VW, a lot better than the lupo. And so reasonable priced, there will be a lot of them on the road. Especially with this UP! GT, which looks very aggressive and sleek like all the sport models across the range, so no doubt this will sell.

Toy cars

These are a simple wooden toy collection created by Portugese designer Emanuel Rufo who has been bridging the gap between product design and craft toys since 2001. He couldn’t have picked more classic cars than these. From front to back in the top image; Ferrari 250 GTO, Ford GT40, Porsche 911 Turbo, Lamborghini Miura, Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gull-wing. I love how simple these are, just focusing on the fundamental shape of the car, with only small important details showing what car these models are styled after, such as air vents on the ferrari and side air ducts on the Ford GT40. These are really cool and would love some for myself!

Audi 50

I love old Volkswagens and Audi's, this is an Audi 50, more commonly know as a polo as it was rebranded by Volkswagen, and was sold with more options which meant it was more popular than the Audi version meaning the audi 50 was discontinued whereas the polo lived on. I love all Volkswagens in this era, they have a real character and personality to them. I love the sharp lines, i love the piece of trim that runs along the side of the car then right at the end it just kick up, which mirrors the shape of the windows. Even though it has sharp lines, the round headlights, the soft curved arches, and the smooth simple chrome bumpers round things off nicely.  Also i love the overall shape of the car, its very wedged, i like how the nose of the car slants forward giving an aggressive look. also how the boot/rear window slants downwards a lot, making the bottom half of the car smaller and lower. People say now a days, less is more, Volkswagen have been living by that motto from the beginning.

Ferrari Interior

Came across this Ferrari Interior and loved it, i really like the position they took the picture from. I love the design and how everything flows but then you have the shape lines on the stitching on the seats. Everything is also driver orientated with all the buttons and controls close by and facing the driver such as having the start/stop button on the steering wheel. the dashboard looks very space age, with all the different parts that protrude, and also the range of high quality materials and finishes such as leather, alcantara, carbon fibre, gloss black finish and the bright coloured stitching. all this put together makes a interior suitable for a ferrari, stylish, unique and super cool.

McLaren F1

The Mclaren F1, all time greatest car? i think so, we just started a engineering project on the automotive design course, and watched a video about how the car was designed and made, and the design and look of the car came solely from aerodynamics. i still cant believe what this car achieved and how it still stands up to todays competition even though its about 20 years old.  i love how they didn't scrape on any part of the car, they used the best materials for every single part of the car. with the naturally aspirated v12 engine, the drivers cockpit in the middle, this is a proper drivers car, and in my opinion the greatest car yet in the 21st century!

The all new Lexus IS F Sport

Lexus of late have definitely stepped there game up in the design world! i remember them being dull and boring for people who played golf. Lexus came to my attention whilst working at toyota in Australia, and there was a Lexus next door, which had a LFA and a lot of nicely spec'd cars. As they were a lot different to the cars i associated Lexus to make. Yes people say its a glorified Toyota, but thats a goos thing in my opinion. This is a piece of art, i don't know why i don't see a lot of Lexus's on the road. i really love all of the lines on this car, how the taillights sweep down to the side skirts, and how the front all comes to a point and meets at the big angular front grille and also the air ducts, which are very aggressive and imposing. yet even though it has this very angular and sporty design, it still manages to do what a Lexus is expected to be, and thats classy. keep up the work lexus! i love what your doing.

Lamborghini sesto

The Lamborghini Sesto, now Lamborghini's have been getting more and more angular of late, have they took it to far this time? i think its so disgusting and there is just so much going on with the shape and lines of the car, but somehow it just looks cool at the same time. i do love how the rear lights are set back and are sheltered by the bodywork giving a very stealth look, also the airducts look like they are from out of space, and the spoiler looks like a master piece of engineering. as there are only 20 being made, that helps the hype in making it alot cooler. this would be one mean looking machine when on the streets.
